Washoe county animal services and Nevada humane society partnership
produces one of the safest communities in U.S. for animals

Successes for 2007 for Washoe County Regional Animal Services include
increases in animal releases to foster care, adoptions and transfer to
Nevada Humane Society and other rescue partners. Rescue partners
include Nevada Humane Society, Wylie Animal Rescue, Reno S.P.C.A., Pet
Network, Community Cats, Another Chance Rescue, Feline Rescue of
Northern Nevada, Boxer Buddies and many others. Humane euthanasia of
animals also decreased 38.5% from the prior year. In the U.S., the
national average for humane euthanasia is 12.5 animals per 1,000
population. Washoe County averages 7.4 animals per 1,000 population.

According to a staff report, 2007 accomplishments for the Nevada Humane
Society include increasing volunteer ranks from 30 to over 1,300,
increasing dog adoptions by 53% and cat adoptions by 84% over 2006,
micro chipping every dog, cat, kitten and puppy before adoption and
finding good, new homes for over 8,030 formerly homeless pets. The
Nevada Humane Society also expanded their foster care program to 385
volunteer foster families who provide care to animals who are shy,
underage, or need special care. And, in conjunction with the
Shakespeare Animal Fund, they also underwrote over $12,000 worth of vet
services for pet owners who cannot afford to treat a sick or injured
pet.

In mid-February of 2006, Washoe County Regional Animal Services and the
Nevada Humane Society co-located into the County's new Regional Animal
Services Center.
