FIRST Blue Ribbon TAX Task Force Committee

The Fairness in Reno Sparks Taxes (FIRST) Blue Ribbon Task Force will work with Muni-Financial, a consultant currently conducting a study of the state's tax structure. One component of this analysis will be to determine which services are genuinely "regional," and should be supported evenly across all jurisdictions. The goal of Reno and Sparks Blue Ribbon Task Force is to establish short and long-term financial strategies for Reno and Sparks governments and to define the role of Washoe County government in Northern Nevada. The Reno City Council has said they want to ensure that residents get the services they need, and pay for the services they receive.

We look forward to having the opportunity to provide accurate historical and current information to the Committee, as we are the source for much of the actual data to evaluate some of the questions being asked, such as what are regional services, etc.

Because tax distribution among entities is a Statewide issue with Statewide impacts, the distribution formulas have repeatedly been reviewed and reaffirmed by the Legislature in the past. We will also be closely following the objective Statewide review of this issue that is already underway by the State Department of Taxation. Since it is a Statewide issue, and the political power in our State is more concentrated in Southern Nevada, proposals to change the distribution of tax revenues could result in negative impacts for Northern Nevada residents, and we certainly want to avoid that.
